The Raz-SP is, we believe, the only self-propel rehab shower chair to offer center of mass adjustment. Why is this important? The ability to adjust the rear wheels fore / aft offers several benefits:
- Moving the rear wheels forward reduces the weight on the front casters. Reducing the weight on the front (and thereby transferring it to the rear) makes the chair easier to propel and to maneuver.
- Moving the rear wheels forward may, in some cases, allow the chair to roll further back over the toilet, better aligning the commode aperture with the toilet bowl.
One potential negative of moving the wheels forward is that the transfer space may be compromised. Another is that side access may be reduced. It may also be necessary to add anti-tippers to protect against increased rearward instability. Like anything, it’s a compromise, but it can improve function substantially.
